The department of Tarn et Garonne is bordered to the West by Lot et Garonne, with a long Northern border with Lot and a long South Eastern border with Tarn. It borders Haute Garonne to the South. It also shares a short border with Aveyron to the East.
The administrative centre and major town is that of Montauban, a charming ancient town of great historical interest and good shopping facilities. Moissac is another ancient town, on the Pilgrims’ route to Compostello with a wonderful old Roman Abbey, completed in 1100 and its fabulous dessert grapes, the Chasselas. St. Nicolas de la Grave has many water sports facilities having a vast lake. Amongst these major towns and others are charming, pretty little villages with old churches, fascinating shops and markets and warm, welcoming people. Much of the Tarn et Garonne is unspoiled, rural and hilly. There seems to be a view in every direction. As with other departments in Midi Pyrenees, it is blessed by water, being crossed by five major rivers. In the summer, the area is alive with all manner of activities: village fêtes, art and music festivals, antique and brocante fairs a nd sporting occasions.
The architecture changes as you move south. The roofs change from being high pitched with lauzes or ardoise to slightly flatter roofs with clay tiles. The walls continue to be of the local stone but there are more pigeonniers in the north of the department.
 Communications are excellent: with the A62 motorway running from Bordeaux to Agen and through to Toulouse in a NW/SE direction, traveling within the department is easy. Access to the International Airports at Toulouse is fast and Bordeaux just a little further.
Although it is increasingly difficult to predict the weather, the climate is generally a balmy mild Mediterranean with hot dry summers and bright, cold winters.
